Ten year old India Opal Buloni and her dad, the preacher, moves to Naomi, Florida during the summer. She misses her friends, and most of all, her mother. Suddenly, at a Grocery Store named "Winn Dixie", she encounters a big, ugly, and distressed dog, with a surprising sense of humour!
Opal names the dog Winn Dixie, and adopts him. Because of Winn Dixie, her father decides to tell Opal ten things about her absent mother, which is, one thing for each year.
Opal soon finds out that Winn Dixie is great at making friends. They meet Miss Franny Block, who is a librarian and a great storyteller, Otis, who is an ex-criminal that plays his guitar for the animals in his petshop. Lastly, they meet Gloria Dump, who sees with her heart, rather than her nearly blind eyes.
Opal collects stories, makes special friends, and thinks about her absent mother and if she will ever see her again. However, Opal learns, from her friends, her dad, and especially her humorous dog Winn Dixie, that sometimes you have to let go, but still hold on to it.
Opal also learns that friendship, love and forgiveness are three very important things in life.
